So Ally Scandic is the work of Silja Lipp — a Tallinn-based mother of two sons who, when her boys were small, ran into the entirely familiar problem of hunting (fruitlessly, in increasing despair) for a changing bag that could hold the full armoury of small-baby paraphernalia, survive being thrown around an airport, and not also make her look as though she had personally surrendered to small-child chaos. None of the available options, in her view, met all three requirements at once. So — as people in this position occasionally do — she simply went and built her own. The brand emerged from the project, set up shop in Estonia, and has built a quiet international following among stylish parents who would rather their hand luggage didn't have a teddy bear on it.

The proposition is properly considered. Bags are made from durable PU vegan leather (no animals, lighter than real leather, easy to wipe down — which, when one has a small person attached, matters more than one might initially think), constructed with YKK zippers and metal base studs, and built around the kind of interior pocket layout a person actually thinking through the daily logistics of parenting would arrive at rather than the kind a designer would. The flagship Black Coffee changing backpack, for example, has sixteen compartments — including a thermo-lined pocket for warm bottles, a separate laptop sleeve, a dedicated pacifier pouch, a waterproof fold-out changing mat, and a set of stroller straps so the bag clips neatly to the pram when one's hands are otherwise occupied — and at 46 x 26 x 16 cm it sits comfortably within most airline cabin allowances, which is the sort of detail that only matters until it really, really matters. The smaller Espresso backpack handles shorter trips, and the standalone pacifier pouch (small enough for keys, lip balm, or earbuds once the dummy phase mercifully passes) tends to outlive the rest of the kit by roughly a decade. Designs lean unapologetically minimalist and grown-up — no pastels, no characters, no apologies — which is, of course, the entire point.
