Some brands are built by committee. This one was built by Helen Locke, who spent twenty years designing childrenswear and knitwear for other people before deciding, quite sensibly, to do it properly herself. The result is Fable & Bear, made in Huddersfield and rather brilliant.

The premise is simple and stubbornly principled: organic cotton throughout, unisex, and seasonless, no chasing the fashion calendar, no garish colours, none of the usual nonsense. Just soft natural fibres, timeless neutral tones, and the most disarming little hand-finished characters, embroidered freckles, noses and whiskers that will make even the most sleep-deprived parent smile.

And it's made to last, which is rather the point. Each piece is designed to be worn through the seasons, then handed down to the next small person in line, sibling, cousin or friend. Clothing with a second and third life built in.
