Nesna Lobben
Norwegian Felted Wool Boots, Made Since 1955.
Nesna Lobben are the original Norwegian felted-wool boots, named for the village of Nesna on Norway's Helgeland coast, where Arctic explorers first developed them in 1955 and which has lent its name to the design ever since. The boots are constructed from boiled and pressed felted wool — a technique that compresses raw wool fibres into a dense, naturally lanolin-rich material — built around a cotton lining and a polyurethane sole moulded with deep grooves for traction on snow and ice. The wool felt is thick enough to insulate to around minus forty-five degrees Celsius, and breathable enough that the feet inside do not get damp from their own perspiration, which is the failure mode that defeats most cold-weather footwear. Originally a piece of Norwegian working kit, the design has since been adopted by Yukon Quest and Iditarod dog mushers, by the wider Alaskan winter audience, and by a European following of people who genuinely live with cold winters.
The boots are now made in a small family-owned workshop in Tartu, Estonia, which has been producing them under the Lobben family name for several decades — the design unchanged from its original Norwegian form, the production scaled to the kind of cottage-industry rhythm that lets the workshop also outfit the junior mushers at the Willow Jr 100 sledge-dog race each year. The range covers the standard Nesna model (calf-high, in red, grey, or black), the longer Femund and Polar models, and a kids' range. One slightly unusual detail worth knowing: the boots come without a left-or-right distinction at first; they adapt to the wearer's feet over the first weeks of use — which is why the brand recommends buying them up to two sizes larger than ordinary shoes, particularly if you intend to wear thick wool socks inside, which most people do. They are not for wet weather; they are for proper, dry, snowy cold.
