Latvian Kitchen Textiles, with Rather a Lot of Hydrangeas.

Hortensias Home is the lovely family-run kitchen-textile brand based in Riga, Latvia — and the name does rather give the game away, since the founders are properly devoted to the hortensia (hydrangea, to most of us). It is, they argue, one of the most captivating flowers in the world, and once one has spent a bit of time looking at the colours and the petal arrangement and so on, one rather has to agree. The brand's whole visual register draws from the hortensia and its garden cousins (roses, peonies, poppies, lilacs) — translated into pastels, soft florals, and the sort of warm, characterful kitchen textiles that turn the routine business of having dinner into something faintly more ceremonial.

The catalogue covers women's and children's aprons, round and rectangular tablecloths, table runners and placemats in various lengths, napkins, oven gloves, pillowcases, towels, and a small bed-linen line. Every piece is handmade in Latvia, with fabrics sourced exclusively from European textile mills — so the entire production chain stays inside Europe, which matters rather more than it used to. The aesthetic range is broader than one might expect: alongside the romantic florals, there are Boho-leaning geometrics, restrained classics, and the seasonal Christmas collections (the Golden Pine and Christmas Story lines are properly festive without straying into the regrettable). For those whose Sunday roast deserves a properly dressed table, or whose kitchen has been begging for an apron that isn't an embarrassment — this is the place.
