Muni
Backpacks That Go on Adventures. Rather Wonderful Ones.
Somewhere in Vilnius, Lithuania, a designer named Monika Vasiliauskienė draws animals. Wolves, dinosaurs, foxes, squirrels, badgers, bunnies — each one painted by hand, then printed onto velvet fabric and turned into a backpack that a small person will almost certainly refuse to take off. Monika grew up between Vilnius and a family summerhouse in a forest on the shore of a lake (her parents are both artists, which probably explains a lot), and the backpacks carry both halves of that upbringing in equal measure: a Lithuanian-forest-and-wildlife sensibility on the surface, and a properly considered urban-design discipline underneath. That's Muni, and it's one of the more delightful things we carry.
Every Muni backpack is made by hand with the kind of attention to detail you genuinely notice — waterproof polyester bases, soft velvet uppers with the hand-printed designs, adjustable shoulder straps, zip closures, two inside slip pockets, and fabric that holds up to the sort of treatment only a six-year-old can deliver. The designs pull from Lithuanian forests and city streets in equal measure: bold but never shouty, imaginative but never impractical. Sizes run from Small (designed for two- to five-year-olds) to Large (good through to about ten), with specific designs including Bunny, Badger, Squirrel, and the wider animal cast. Monika has more recently started incorporating recycled fabrics into the range. These are bags children ask for by name and carry for years — which in the world of children's accessories makes them something of a rarity. Worldwide shipping from Vilnius, washable on a 30°C gentle cycle.
