Give It a Wash: Hand wash with a sponge in your bath or shower, or run a gentle machine cycle at 40 degrees maximum to remove any residual manufacturer film.
Try a Salt Scrub: Sprinkle the mat with a mixture of sea salt and warm water, then gently brush or wipe. This helps break down the initial layer and improves grip straightaway.
